Buenos Aires Mountain Resort, another tourist destination in Negros Occidental

Another famous tourist destination in Negros Occidental is Buenos Aires Mountain Resort located in Brgy. Ilijan in Bago City. Going there from Bacolod City would usually take about 45 minutes but for our group it took more since we were disoriented about the route (it was our first time without any guide!) and we had to stop by and ask the locals for directions. 

For day-trippers, the resort offers open cottages while those planning to stay longer can stay at the hillside hotel located further up. There are also some closed cottages along the slopes with pathways leading up to the hotel. Those who prefer not hiking up can stay in one of the family suites in a rowhouse beside the Administration Office building.

Buenos Aires Mountain Resort is maintained by the Bago City  local government and supported by the Department of Tourism. The resort offers varied accommodation and facilities for day-trippers and visitors planning to stay overnight or for few days. Upon arrival at the resort, turn right and drive up to the Administration Office to settle your preferred accommodation (or reservation if you phoned ahead).

The hotel rooms, family suites and some closed cottages are air-conditioned with convenience outlets. The open cottages are also provided with convenience outlets. We arrived lunch time at the resort but decided to go on ahead to Rafael Salas Park and Nature Center  where we stayed overnight. We came back to Buenos Aires the next day, had our lunch at one of the open cottages by the brook and soaked ourselves for a while by the pool before heading home.

How To Get There
Air travel time from Manila to Caticlan Airport by reliable scheduled commuter aircraft, Asian Spirit (6K) and SEAir(DG), is about one (1) hour. From the airport to the Caticlan jetty port is a short hop of one-half (1/2) kilometer by the resort van or mini-bus. A native motorized outrigger boat or 'banca' servicing the resort exclusively takes you from the jetty port to the resort in about twenty (20) minutes. Air charters from Manila and other points can be arranged.

The principal domestice airlines, Philippine Airline (PR), Cebu Pacific (5J), operate several flights daily from Manila to the capital town of Kalibo, from where you can take an air-conditioned tour bus to Caticlan jetty port. The road trip from Kalibo is about two (2) hours over excellent roads. During peak travel season, Philippine Airlines operates shuttle flights from Cebu City-Mactan International Airport.

Apo Island Liberty Lodge

One of the two beach resorts in the island, Liberty Lodge is a unique structure whose central portion is built into a rock wall, giving you the impression of being actually carved into it.

The lodge has nine rooms, all with electric fans and decorated in typical Filipino fashion. Large windows abound in the whole building to address ventilation issues as air conditioning is virtually unheard of in the island. Bamboo and wood make up for much of the materials used, the furniture is also made of comfortable bamboo designs made by local craftsmen.

Recent expansion has brought about bigger rooms, each having its own private little balcony facing west of the island. Room rates begin from 20 USD to 40 USD depending on the type of accommodation.

Also in Liberty Lodge is Paul’s Diving, a specialty dive shop who offer diving services as well as rent out equipment and gear. Lakawon Island Beach Resort

Lakawon Island Resort is a 13-hectare, banana-shaped island off the coast of Cadiz City in the northern portion of Negros Occidental, a province in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. A white sand beach resort on the island, a family-run business, is a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists.

The island is more similar to a sandbar. The white sand beaches are largely on the part of the island facing the island of Negros. The opposite portion, facing the open sea, is more rugged. There is a small fishing village on one side of the island. The inhabitants there earn their living from harvesting the sea's bounty and from working in the private resort.

Lakawon Island is 48 kilometers north of Bacolod City, the provincial capital. The island is accessible from the coast of Barangay Cadiz via a 20-minute boat ride. Lakawon's white sand beach is claimed to rival that of Boracay, a popular island resort off the coast of Aklan in Panay. In stark contrast to its more famous counterpart, however, Lakawon has a smaller influx of tourists, and the island is not commercially developed.

How to get there?

Getting to Cadiz City, which is the nearest embarkation point to the island, may be done via private or public transportation. From Bacolod City, or any point of Negros, are numerous jeepneys available for hire, driver included. One may also take Ceres Liner buses from any of the cities and municipalities in the province. From the national highway in Cadiz City, a dirt road leads to the shore. The island is visible from here and parking space is available. Waterfalls of Mount Kanlaon

The City of Canlaon is home to many waterfalls, the most popular of them are the Quipot Falls and the two waterfalls of Sudlon. Because of the mountain ranges that compose the geographical landscape of Canlaon City beginning with the world renowned Mt. Kanlaon, water spilling from the elevations and cascading down to the mountain rivers naturally become its tributaries.

Quipot Falls. Quipot Falls takes the shape of a bottle and drops down from a hundred meter elevation before it plunges into a deep water basin that is suitable for swimming, boating and fishing. Solid but uneven rock formations provide as a backdrop for its wide cascade. It has three tributary rivers – Binalbagan, Malaiba and Linothangan -- whose waters incessantly converge to bestow Quipot Falls with ample gushing water supply.

Located just 5 kilometres from the Canlaon City proper, Quipot Falls is one of the tourist attractions in the city that has brought in many enthusiasts travelling from all parts of the country and the world. The waterfall is enveloped with tropical plants and trees that also provide a habitat for wildlife.

Sudlon Waterfalls

Two waterfalls of Sudlon. Sudlon One and Sudlon Two are two separate waterfalls with a distance of 120 meters between them. It is found in the secluded northeastern part of Mt. Kanlaon, 6 meters from the city proper. These two waterfalls are bounded by two hills which makes the trek more intriguing. One has to clamber over rocks and vegetation to be able to reach the falls and once there, be enthralled by its pure and natural beauty.

Sudlon Waterfalls tumbles over rocks from a 25 meter height and falls into a deep water cauldron, making it also ideal for swimming, boating and fishing. Photography buffs will also find it an absorbing form of recreation because of the countless scenic views it provides. Canopied forests, an occasional wild orchid or a rare insect resting on a leaf are among the many picture perfect moments. The clatter of wildlife is another tribute to nature especially when only heard but not seen.

Mambukal Mountain Resort

Mambukal Mountain Resort has many beautiful sceneries to offer, both man made and by Nature. Mambukal Resort lies 1,200 feet or about 366 meters above sea level and serves as a gateway to the Mount Kanlaon Volcano.

Kanlaon Volcano is one of the prides of the Visayans because of its exceptional beauty. Mount Kanlaon is the highest mountain peak in Visayas or the Central Philippines. It has a height of 8,088 feet or about 2,465 meters and a base diameter of 30,000 meters. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the country and is part of the Negros Volcanic Belt. Mount Kanlaon is surrounded by volcanic peaks and several craters. It is also the host of many waterfalls such as the two waterfalls of Quipot and the Sudlon Falls.
 

Mambukal Mountain Resort with a land area of over 23.6 hectares, Mambukal is blessed with numerous beautiful natural resources. A huge mountain stream, fed by several water channels, flows down in a series of seven falls and flows through the center of the resort, feeding the swimming pools and boating lagoon.

Hot Spring
A bath house with spa, famous to the Asian people, particularly the Japanese tourists, is supplied with hot and cold water from the springs coming from the mountain. Known for its therapeutic treatment, people with body fatigue dip into it to relieved their stress and have relaxed.

Mudpack Festival
The much anticipated Mudpack Festival is celebrated every third weekend of June at Mambukal Resort. The Mudpack Festival is a symbolic presentation that seeks to instill awareness in caring for the environment. Dancers are painted and coated with colorful mud found abundant in the resort.

The Mudpack Festival is a different event as it centers on the harmony of man and nature. The celebration features Mambukal’s distinct multi-colored clay to stir people’s awareness of the importance of our environment. It is a Festival of Arts and this serves as venue where artist from all over Negros gather to exhibit their respective artistic talents in ethnic dances, crafts and music.

Tinabu-ay Festival
Another festival here is the so-called Tinabu-ay Festival, the town annual celebration of good harvest and thanksgiving. It is a 9-day religious-cultural folk festival depicting the town's market day and highlighting its agricultural products. It is also a celebration in honor of the birthday of the Immaculate Conception, the patron saint of this town.

 Victory day
The province-wide “Victory Day” celebrating every September 9, wherein the Japanese soldiers surrendered to the Americans in Barangay Santa Rosa, commemorating the heroism and patriotism of native soldiers during the Second World War.

Getting to Murcia
Murcia is only a twenty-minute drive from Bacolod City by private car, about 30 to 45 minutes by Public Utility Vehicles, and flying this route can reach the municipality in almost the same time.

The City of Bacolod is located at the northern part of Negros Occidental, northwest of Negros Oriental and southeastern part of the province of Iloilo. It is the capital city and entry point to Negros Occidental. Aside from having culture and history, Bacolod City has excellent convention facilities making it a convention destination.

Getting To Bacolod City
There are three ways to reached Bacolod City:

 By Air
Bacolod can be accessed by three major airline companies ( PAL, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines ) that also run connecting flights to different parts of the Visayas and Mindanao region.

By Sea
Two major sea vessels, the WG & A from Superferry and Negros Navigation Company, respectively, fly the route from Manila to Bacolod as well five minor commercial vessels that connect it to the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao region.

By Land

Negros Island

Negros Island is the fourth biggest island in the Philippine archipelago, lies near the central part of the country. Negros Occidental, in the western side of the island, is one of the 6 provinces comprising Region VI, Western Visayas.

Negros Occidental is endowed with beautiful natural scenery and attractions, rich historical and cultural heritage as well as festivals and events that make it an attractive tourist destination. The province also offers many opportunities for leisure and adventure. There are always festivals and events being celebrated somewhere in Negros Occidental every month.  But the best known of the more than 50 festivals and events are the MassKara Festival of Bacolod celebrated in October and the Panaad sa Negros Festival staged every April.  

The province is rich in beautiful structures and historical buildings. The San Sebastian Cathedral and the Capitol Building are popular Bacolod landmarks.  Silay City has fine examples of palatial homes, remnants of a once affluent lifestyle.  In other towns, steam locomotives that used to cart sugarcane from the fields to refineries attract steam engine enthusiasts from all over the world.  There are also impressive churches all over the province, mostly built during the Spanish era.

Beach Resorts
Negros Occidental has more than 50 inland and beach resorts to offer its visitors.  The most famous among them is the Mambukal, a mountain resort at the foot of Mount Kanlaon.

Among the numerous beach resorts, the most popular for its white sand,  pristine blue waters and amenities are Punta Bulata in Cauayan, Jomabo Island Paradise in Sagay, and Lakawon Island in Cadiz.

Through its capital, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental is only 50 minutes from Manila  and 30 minutes from Cebu by air.  By sea, it is an 18-hour cruise from Manila and an hour by fast ferries from Iloilo. It is also accessible by sea and land trip from Cebu via Escalante City, San Carlos City and Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental. Travel from Bacolod to Dumaguete is only 5 to 6 hours by land.

The airport is located 6 kilometers southeast of Bacolod City.  However, a new airport of international standard is being constructed in Silay City about 16 kilometers from Bacolod.
